Running Beside Them
When I was given this assignment, I struggled to decide what direction to take. I knew I wanted to include my children because they are the biggest part of my life, but I was not sure how to capture that. The idea came to me when I found the photograph of my kids high fiving me while I was running a 10 km race. That moment inspired this entire series.

In class, Marcelle said something that deeply resonated with me. “Motherhood rocked me to my core.” That statement perfectly describes my own experience. Motherhood has been the most beautiful and chaotic adventure of my life. It has often left me wondering who I am, who I was before children, and who I am becoming alongside them.
As a family, we have always been a bring the kids everywhere household. Not because it is easier, because it definitely is not, but because we want our children to be part of the adventures that shape our lives. Whether it is snowboarding, mountain biking, backcountry trips, or running races, we want them to experience the things we love and feel that they belong in those moments with us.
When I turned 35, deep in the exhausting stages of motherhood, I made a decision to reconnect with a part of myself. I signed up for the Wasa Triathlon. Throughout the race my family cheered me on, and seeing my children waiting for me at the finish line is a feeling I will never forget.

I hope to show my children how much joy can come from moving their bodies and being active. Not because they have to be the best, but because challenge, effort, and passion can help us grow into the best version of ourselves.
These photographs capture more than a race or a single moment. They show connection, encouragement, and the small ways parents and children inspire each other.
The final photograph shows my six year old daughter Kyah running her first 5 km race, where she placed second in females under 18. Watching her cross that finish line showed me that something powerful is happening. She is discovering what it feels like to challenge herself and to be proud of what her body can do.

More than anything, I hope these images reflect the kind of example I want to set. At the end of the day, I simply want to be someone my children are proud of.

Below is an additional series of images of my children participating in mountain bike races, running, hockey, snowboarding and dirt biking (disclaimer: they do wear helmets when riding). These moments offer a glimpse into the active lifestyle I hope they continue to choose as they grow.
