What steps did you take to create your artwork?
To create this canvas, I began by taping off the sections I wanted to remain white, forming a simple geometric design. I then mixed my colour palette, choosing three main colours and blending each with white to soften them, resulting in six cohesive tones for my collaborative piece. We worked in a group of three, with each person preparing a taped canvas and a unique palette. We started by painting one section of our own canvas, then rotated, each painting a single section on one another’s work. The key part of the process was that the paint palette stayed with the canvas, allowing the original artist to retain some control over the overall feel of their piece while still inviting collaboration and shared creativity.
What challenges did you face? How did you work through them?
Our collaborative work today was a great experience. My partners and I all came in with open minds and gave one another the space to make artistic choices about where and how we painted.
What do you like or dislike about your work?
I really like this piece of work because it reminds me of the conversations we shared while creating it. The colours blend beautifully and highlight one another, much like the way each person in our group brought something unique to the process. The finished piece reflects how I felt while working with my group: supported, connected, and part of something cohesive.
What did you learn by creating this artwork?
It felt freeing to share creative control and trust both the process and the other artists. Working this way made the experience more meaningful and fun. It showed me that collaboration can deepen creativity when everyone feels respected and heard. I also learned that I may have more of an artistic eye than I give myself credit for. I created my palette without referring to the colour wheel, yet the tones still worked together. That realization helped me trust my instincts and recognize that creativity can be intuitive, not just technical.
